Alt Attributes and SEO...Do They Help?

In my personal opinion a 100% answer is up in the air. I do believe they help to a point, but not to extreme measures. Two things I consider regarding alt tags are universal search results and usability. Adding an alt attribute can increase chances of having it listed within universal search results and also provide a short description of the picture for users. Well, Search Engine Roundtable conducted a survey asking SEO professionals whether or not alt tags improve search ranking and 80% of the respondents say 'yes' and 20% 'no'. I guess I am not surprised by the results, but would have thought the 80% would have been slightly higher. We can't agree on everything, right?

World Usability Day is Finally Here!

If you are like me, you wait all year for World Usability Day to come...the wait is over! OK, maybe it is not my favorite day of the year but I do think it is a good day. It was pointed out to me in a post on the Crea8pc site called 'The Shots Heard Around the Search Marketing Industry Will Bang Better with Usability.' As mentioned in the article, many people in the search engine optimization let usability fall to the wayside because their goal is to get people to click on the site. My personal opinion is that usability is just as important as the traditional SEO procedures because, A. it increases the likelihood of a conversion and B. a quality web site has more link potential...I consider quality web sites to be user friendly. When I analyze a site to find ways to make it search engine friendly, I always have ideas that would enhance the usability of the site, so why not take a note and suggest the change?
